HISTORY CLUB COMPETES IN REGIONALS
Lake Hamilton History Club students recently competed in their second National History Day (NHD) regional competition. Three students placed at regionals and received invitations to compete in the NHD State Competition: Aliyah Mairs and Claire Slaughter (1st), Lillian Halter (3rd). The NHD state competition will be held virtually on April 25, 2021.
Congratulations to all of the following history club students for submitting projects to the regional competition:
8th graders Kynli Wheeler, Easton Smith, and Jake Spruill created a documentary about the Gutenberg Press and its role in the Protestant Reformation.
8th graders Aliyah Mairs and Claire Slaughter choreographed a performance about contemporary dance, and the effect it had on social changes.
8th graders Lillian Halter created a documentary that explores the psychology behind Hitlerโs speeches, and his popularity in Germany before the war.
7th graders Mollie Margaret Gidcomb and Haddie Heard designed a unique exhibit titled. โPractical Threads: Expressing Women Empowerment Through Fashion.โ
7th grader Abigail Cousins wrote a historical research paper about Amelia Bloomerโs newspaper publication and the role it played during the womenโs suffrage movement.
8th graders Kaitlin Guthrie and Gabby Gilliam designed an exhibit board to showcase Anne Frankโs diary.
7th grader Krystiana Walkerโs documentary covered Hamilton and Burrโs infamous duel.
7th grader Johnny Ward focused his research on the secret network and communication of the Underground Railroad (documentary).
The history club's sponsor is Leah Graveley.

FOOD SCIENCE EXPERIMENT
Lake Hamilton High School students in Melody Gilleran's food safety and nutrition classes recently conducted a food science experiment that produced rainbows using food coloring in milk. Students demonstrated the property of surface tension and the effect a surfactant has on it. The students also analyzed the fat content of various milks and predicted the outcome of each milk based on their knowledge of how surfactants react to fats. #LHWolfNation





QUIZ BOWL HEADED TO STATE FINALS
The Lake Hamilton High School quiz bowl team recently competed in the virtual 6A state tournament and qualified to face off against Russellville in the 6A championship game in April. The match will air on AETN with the date and time to be determined.
Will Livingston, team captain, was the team's high-point player. Both Livingston and Wesley Bonner earned all-tournament honors.

CHESS RESULTS
The Lake Hamilton Junior High chess team recently finished 3rd in the state regional tournament. 40 students participated in the virtual tournament with team standings determined by the top four players on each team.
The Lake Hamilton High School chess team recently placed 9th out of 20 teams and 86 students in the state regional tournament.

STUDENT ARTIST SELECTED FOR EXHIBITION
Alexis Ogilvie, a senior art student at Lake Hamilton High School, has has submitted her work, "The Sky Diver," in the Young Arkansas Artists competition. Alexis was asked to include her work into the two-year loan program for display around the state. Displays include the Arkansas Children's Hospital and the Clinton National Airport.
The Young Arkansas Artists competition highlights the remarkable talent, creativity, and perspective of Arkansas students. For 60 years, the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts has been giving young student artists the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents and skills through the annual Young Arkansas Artist competition. Each year, art teachers and instructors throughout Arkansas submit their studentsโ work K-12 in a variety of media.
Traditionally, there are close to 500 entries each year. A panel of art professionals select works to be included in the exhibition. A grand juror awards a Best of Class and two Honorable Mentions per grade, as well as the Ray Smenner Award for Painting and the Mid-Southern Watercolorists Award for Watercolor. The Young Arkansas Artists Exhibition also rewards each winnerโs schools to benefit their art programs and encourage further engagement with the arts.
The online exhibition opens May 15.

ARKANSAS GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL
Three Lake Hamilton High School 11th grade students have been selected to attend Arkansas Governor's School (AGS) this summer. AGS is a six week summer program of intense study held at Arkansas Tech University. Only 400 students are allowed to attend each summer. It is a highly competitive, prestigious program, presented by the Arkansas Gifted and Talented Department of Education.

COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR FINALIST
Lake Hamilton Junior High computer science teacher, Ashley Kincannon, has been selected as a finalist for the 2021 Computer Science Educator of the Year award.
The Arkansas Department of Education announced five educators that were selected as finalists.
โThe ADE Office of Computer Science received many quality applications,โ Anthony Owen, the state director of Computer Science Education, said. โThis yearโs applications were some of the most competitive we have seen in the three years of this award. Unfortunately, our team could only select five, and we selected the educators who best demonstrated both a long-term and ongoing commitment to, passion for, and impact on computer science education in Arkansas and the nation. These educators have earned and deserve this recognition."
The 2021 Arkansas Computer Science Educator of the Year Finalists are as follows:

Each finalist will receive a $2,500 award from the ADE Office of Computer Science. A panel of representatives from the ADE Computer Science Unit, the 2020 Arkansas Computer Science Educator of the Year, external industry leaders, and other education experts will review the finalistsโ applications and select the 2021 Arkansas Computer Science Educator of the Year based on a rubric scoring system. The winner, who will be announced at a later date, will receive an additional $12,500 award.

FOR THE BIRDS
Lake Hamilton Middle School students in Stacey Dickson's classes recently made bird feeders out of toilet paper rolls, peanut butter, and bird seed. The students hung the feeders outside of their classroom so they could watch and spot all of the different birds that visit each day through the window! #LHWolfNation
