ARKANSAS DECLARATION OF LEARNING PROGRAM
The Lake Hamilton School District is pleased to share the exciting news that Nikki Aitken, an 8th and 9th-grade library media specialist, and Shelly Wheeler, an 8th and 9th-grade visual art and gifted and talented teacher, have been selected to participate in the prestigious Arkansas Declaration of Learning program during the upcoming academic school year.
Nikki and Shelly are two of only 25 educators selected for this program out of the hundreds of applications received. They successfully completed an intensive week-long professional development training this summer, have worked one-on-one with an experienced mentor, and are prepared to implement the object-based and project-based skills with their students.
During the academic year, Nikki and Shelly will develop and test their dynamic unit and lesson plans - and launch a civic engagement project - that helps engage students in active learning.
"Arkansas is the first state in the country to implement the national Declaration of Learning program," Johnny Key, Arkansas Department of Education Commissioner has said. "And through the Arkansas Department of Education's partnerships with other organizations, we have enhanced student learning by providing access to historical objects that are rich in history. Together we are transforming Arkansas to lead the nation in student-focused education."

LHIS TEACHER RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP
Brittany Bailey, a teacher at Lake Hamilton Intermediate School, has recently been named a 2021 recipient of the Parsons-Burnett Scholarship Grant. These scholarships are awarded each year by the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association with the purpose of supporting Arkansas public-school educators in furthering their education.
Bailey is a graduate of Henderson State University and is currently teaching 4th grade. She plans to use the funds to complete the Curriculum Director Certificate Program through Arkansas State University.
Twelve scholarships were awarded this year through a competitive application process. The scholarships are funded by contributions from the members of the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association (ARTA).
ARTA was established in 1939-40 with 15 members. Today, it is the fourth-largest professional trade association in Arkansas. The organization maintains an active interest in public education while advocating for the professional, personal, social, and economic welfare of retired (and future-retired) public school employees.
Presenting the check to Bailey was Caroline Miller and Golden Lloyd with the Garland County Retired Teachers Association Chapter. Any retired educator in Garland County is invited to join the GCRTA for their first meeting on September 17, 2021. Email goldenlloyd4@yahoo.com for more information.
